Renewable Energy Statistics: Different Facts and Figures Exposed
from:
Renewable energy is now taking part on providing world’s energy needs. More and more countries start to utilize renewable energy which can be sourced out from our environment without the hassle of exploring or excavating. We can not rely anymore on our fossil fuel reserves which is depleting in a rapid rate. Because of limited fossil fuel supply against its increasing demand, its prices in the international energy market starts to increase.
After the extensive promotion or renewable energy throughout the world, you might as well wonder how far these new energy sources have gone in providing the world’s energy needs. This article will focus on statistics in connection to different areas of concern about renewable energy. The facts and figures will give you the idea of the development of renewable energy at this point in time.
Electricity Generation
The use of renewable energy is now invading the energy industry, particularly those countries that are committed to the policies stated in the Climate Change Convention of 1992. For those who are unaware of such convention, it is ratified by member-countries of the United Nations which states their commitment on reducing emission of greenhouse gases in our ecosystem by using renewable energy for electricity generation.
In United Kingdom (one of the 39 developed countries committed to reduce their greenhouse gas emission), 10 percent of their generated electricity is now from renewable energy. The installed capacity of their renewable energy sources gradually increase to 9 percent in 2003 as against 6.5 percent during the previous year. It is due to the 19 percent increase in on-shore wind facilities and doubling their existing off-shore wind facilities.
In addition, the capability of existing solar radiation system (SRS) showed a 37 percent increase and turned to be increasing its capacity 4 times after 4 years. It is due to the sustainability of solar projects and the improvement done on its components such as the solar hybrid energy system. Such system is designed to provide heat and electricity for a certain structure using the sunlight’s captured energy.
The electricity generated form renewable energy amounted to 14,171 gigawatt-hour (GWh) which shows a 33.2 increase in the production on 2003. Different renewable sources such as the hydropower (posted +52.7 percent), biomass (posted +22.2 percent), solar energy (posted +37 percent), and wind energy (posted +51.6 percent).
International Renewable Energy Statistics
The wind energy is accounted for 1 percent of the total electricity generation worldwide in 2005. Germany is the top producer of wind energy posting 32 percent of the overall world capacity in 200. Wind power is also accounted for Germany’s 6 percent of generated electricity which is expected to increase at 12.5 percent by 2010. The country has 16,000 wind turbines, which has an individual installed capacity of 4.5 and 5 megawatts.
Spain and United States are next in terms of wind energy installed capacity. The Spain government approved a new wind power project that could generate 20,000 megawatts by 2012. On the other hand, United States are now using wind energy which has 0.4 percent contribution on the overall generated electricity of the country in 2005, higher than the 1999’s 0.1 percents. Studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy shows that wind harvested in 3 out of the 50 U.S. states could generate electricity for the entire country.
In solar power, Germany is still leading in terms of installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity in the year 2004, amounting to 363,000 megawatts. Next is Japan, with 272,368 megawatts, and the United States, with 90,000 megawatts. Most of the largest PV plants are located in Germany. Six large PV plants are handling a total of 228,840 solar modules. The PV plant located in Springerville in Arizona, has 34,980 solar modules which produces peak power of 4.59 megawatts.
From the aforementioned international statistics, we can say that utilization of renewable energy sources are getting a good run in terms of providing global energy needs. The figures will increase, as long as developments are made.
